Surrealist oil paintings born from music, folklore and the local landscapes.
Several years ago, I saw a painting by Zdzisław Beksiński and was amazed. For the first time I felt as though I could see the subject move on the canvas. That moment reignited my desire to paint and I delved into the world of surrealism.
Inspiration comes to me through music, stories and whatever emotion I am feeling at the time. Every flash of an idea is scribbled down into sketch pads, which I constantly re-visit until I feel the time is right to create it in earnest. No piece is ever set in stone and will quite often change as I paint, letting the piece evolve over time.
Having lived with anxiety all my life, I let it fuel each piece. It gives every work a truly personal attachment and allows me to explore emotions that can be difficult to express in words.
Each piece is a journey and in some ways, my therapy. My greatest hope is that they convey to others a snapshot of meaningful emotion. Whether someone loves or hates a work, if it makes them feel something, then the piece has achieved its purpose. That emotional response is what I believe true art is about.
